Ref. 26225-15A NEW project in Watchfield near Swindon is hoping therapy through horticulture can help people with mental illnesses.

Root and Branch, which is based in converted stables at the organic Westmill Farm off the A420, is an ideal setting in which to promote the mental and emotional well-being of adults suffering from mental health difficulties through a range of creative activities.

Liz Clarke, 29, project manager, said: "We work in a interesting, stimulating and peaceful environment it really boosts self confidence and self esteem.

"Many people with mental illnesses are shunned by society and tend to isolate themselves, but projects like this make people feel valued."

Root and Branch plan to regenerate a slice of land measuring around half-an-acre at Westmill Farm to include a vegetable plot, wildlife area, herb garden and space where people can indulge in other land-based activities.

The project, which caters for people of 18 years and above living in the Swindon, South Oxfordshire and East Gloucester-shire area held an open day on Sunday.

It takes referrals from social services, health authorities, GPs and voluntary organisations. The project has charitable status and is staffed by volunteers. For more information call 01793 780380.
