FRIDAY August 15 was the 58th Anniversary of V J Day (Victory over Japan) but I neither saw nor heard of any arrangements in Swindon to commemorate this.
Many paid the supreme sacrifice in this war in the Far East and, with the passage of time, the number of living veterans and/or their dependents is declining.
However, with the British Legion and numerous ex-service associations in Swindon and even Local Government, I would have thought it only right and proper as a token of Remembrance that a parade and church service would have been held to mark this important date in history.
We owe it to those who gave their lives, to those who suffered wounds and disease and to those who spent many years incarcerated in terrible Prisoner of War camp conditions. We owe it to them to remember.
