VOLUNTEERS are needed to welcome visitors to Wiltshire's historic properties.
The National Trust is looking for stewards to help out during the summer months, one of the busiest times of the year.
People will need to commit to one day a week or fortnight on a regular basis from April to November.
Volunteers play a critical role in the properties' security, and also help bring the houses to life by explaining the stories behind the buildings.
People do not have to be experts in history or architecture but a keen interest will help. Jenny Baker, the National Trust's head of volunteering, said: "Room stewards are vital to our operation as a charity and there is a particular need for weekend stewards.
"We rely heavily on people who are retired, who provide regular weekday help, but we would like to see more students and younger volunteers who are willing to donate some of their weekend."
Anyone interested in volunteering at National Trust properties, which include Avebury Manor and Lacock Abbey, should call (0870) 6095383 or visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/volunteers.
