WILTSHIRE Bowlers Joint Council will be holding their annual mixed galas on Sunday.

They will be staged at three venues around the county at Amesbury, Chippenham Town and Swindon Bowling Club.

This highly successful annual event has in the past raised around £1,000 on each occasion it has been held.

This year's proceeds will go to bowls benevolent funds in Wiltshire and to the Wiltshire Bowlers Joint Council, thus enabling this body to support initiatives such as the development of under 18 players.

It is backed by the Evening Advertiser, who are once again sponsoring the mixed gala at Swindon BC where the participating teams will be: Cooper-Avon Tyres, Corsham A, Devizes, Purton, Spencer Melksham B, Swindon, Wilton and Wootton Bassett.

Rangers Peugeot and BAW Consultancy Ltd sponsor the mixed gala at Amesbury and will feature Alderbury A, Amesbury, Bradford on Avon B, Salisbury, Spencer Moulton, Trowbridge Westbourne and Warminster A. Spencer Melksham A and Warminster B will contest the mixed gala at Chippenham Town, which is sponsored again by Cooper-Avon Tyres Ltd.

Each team consists of nine players, a mixed pair, mixed triple and mixed four.

At each venue, the eight teams are drawn into two groups of four. All the teams play three matches in their section with the two group winners qualifying for the final. The winners at each venue receive £100 and the runners-up £50.

WESTLECOT and Wootton Bassett are through to the second round of the English national triples championship at Worthing.

Westlecot (Mark Dyer, Neil Hope and Mel Biggs) beat King's Heath, Birmingham, 23-9, and Bassett (Bob Clews, Richard Buckland and Hedley Bowen) beat Taunton 23-12 in the opening round yesterday.
