CIVIC leaders in Melksham have criticised a developer's plans to build houses on an industrial site in the town centre because they do not feel there is enough room.

Box-based developer Charles Tull wants to replace industrial units in Stratton's Walk with 22 homes.

But the town council objected to the plans on Monday because they are worried about the development of the site, the out of character design and traffic congestion.

Councillor Colin Goodhind said: "The roads around there are busy enough already. We are really keen to see areas improved but we have to respect the feelings of local people and identify anything that doesn't comply with planning law.

"We look forward to seeing the plans come back with our concerns add-ressed."

Mr Tull, who is also planning to build houses on the former GEC factory site in Beanacre Road, said the design for Stratton's Walk would enhance the area.

He said: "The houses will be of a very traditional design. The same architect who worked on the Beanacre site has come up with the approach, and the design is in keeping with the town.

"Less HGV traffic will be passing through the town because there will no longer be any industrial units on the site. It will be something special."

If West Wiltshire District Council passes the plans, Mr Tull said work would start immediately and could be completed within nine months.
