QUICK-THINKING cricket supporters saved their Trowbridge clubhouse from being burnt to the ground after spotting a smouldering cigarette on the roof.
Club members fetched buckets of water and doused the space in the eaves where a fire had begun at around 7.15pm on Saturday, after a cigarette butt ignited leaves in the pavilion's guttering.
Wiltshire Fire Brigade officers have reissued a warning to people to ensure cigarette butts are fully extinguished before being discarded.
A brigade spokesman said: "A carelessly discarded cigarette could have destroyed the pavilion but for the fact it was quickly spotted and extinguished."
The fire failed to disrupt proceedings as the home team carried on with a scheduled cricket match against Devizes.
Club member Christine Scrine said the fire caused minimal damage to the pavilion.
She said: "We got the fire extinguishers out and put the fire out in seconds.
"We called the fire brigade just as a precaution because the pavilion is a wooden building and could have gone up in flames very quickly."
