YOUNG men are being urged to "do it" for Trowbridge in a bid to save the doomed maternity unit.
Former mayor Jeff Osborn believes one solution to keep the threatened Trowbridge maternity unit is for residents to simply have more babies.
At present the unit is under review because there are not enough babies being born there.
Town, district and county councillor Jeff Osborn, said: "What we need is for the young virile men of Trowbridge to get out there with the women and help fill our maternity unit, otherwise we could lose it.
"But ladies I am not offering to help so don't come running to me."
On an average day the maternity unit is 40 per cent below capacity.
Trowbridge is one of nine units under threat in the region and needs a further 600 babies each year for the beds to remain open.
A report on the future of the maternity unit is being compiled by the West Wiltshire Primary Care Trust and should be revealed in September.
