The new season is just a week old, but already thoughts are turning to the FA Cup, writes CRAIG LYUS.

For local sides like Highworth and Devizes, even qualification for the First Round Proper is a mammoth task, but the competition remains a vital source of income to semi-professional clubs.

Both teams enter the competition at the extra preliminary round stage tomorrow, with Highworth entertaining Shortwood and Devizes hosting Christchurch.

A cheque for £500 awaits the winner of each tie and Highworth boss John Fisher knows that prize money is crucial to clubs at non-league level.

"A decent run can generate the sort of money that can get you through the season," he said.

"At Highworth we budget properly and any money we get through the FA Cup is just a big bonus, but some clubs rely on it."

Fisher's only injury worry ahead of Shortwood's visit is midfielder Jamie Mills who has a calf problem.

Defender Nick McRae should feature after signing from Oxford City.

For Devizes, the money is crucial following their much-publicised financial difficulties.

Manager Dave Hopkins said: "Every non-league club wants a decent run in the FA Cup because of the money that can be made from it.

"Hopefully we can put a run of our own together."

Player-boss Hopkins faces a fitness test along with forward Justin Lyle, but Nathan Perkins returns after missing the midweek defeat to Frome.
