Wiltshire Wildlife Trust has raised concerns that the ancient hill fort at Barbury is not being grazed satisfactorily. It is observed that half-metre high grasses and weed are in abundance on this site.

Since the Simpsons were forced to have their sheep destroyed (owing to the outbreak of foot and mouth disease on neighbouring farm land), they have been under notice of eviction, therefore being unable to replace these animals.

This has resulted in today's situation of ungrazed land in the hill fort site. The blame must lie squarely with our local council, which has acted unfairly towards the tenant farmer who understands the countryside and its working methods.

New proposals from Swindon Borough Council intend short term grazing contracts to be adopted.

This method is seriously flawed as grazing continuity cannot be assured.

John Short of Swindon Services has already admitted that the majority of people do not wish to see change at Barbury.

This site has always been a nature park, people do not want spoon-fed information. Most people have intelligence enough to find for themselves the beauty of nature.

Refreshments at Ridgeway Farm are superb, and readily available in a relaxing, friendly atmosphere.

Finally, who is going to foot the bill for the proposed changes? The visitor I guess, by one means or another.
