Ref. 26299-5A DOCTOR from Belarus has visited the Great Western Hospital to say thank-you for £4,000 worth of medical equipment donated to her hospital.

Dr Alla Shevko, a paediatrician in the former Soviet State toured the special care baby unit and maternity wards with consultant gynaecologist Dr Andrew Bond and hospital chief executive Lyn Hill-Tout.

The donated equipment was surplus to requirements after the closure of the Princess Margaret Hospital last year, was donated to the Zaslowya Project.

The charity helps children living in the former Soviet state of Belarus who suffered as a result of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986.

Swindon businessman Mark Gillingham helped ship the items to a hospital in the town of Zaslowya. They included an electro cardiogram machines, four nebulisers and two patient monitors as well as dressings and needles.

He said: "We have a group of children from the Zaslowya project visiting us at the moment. They have a hectic schedule and will also be watching a football match thanks to Swindon Town Football Club.

"They were delighted to receive this equipment, it will be very useful.

"I hope it's the first of many mutual links between the two hospitals."
