ALTHOUGH Ascot is better known as the home of thoroughbred horses and ladies with big hats it was recently the stage for the first ever Wag and Bone dog show.

And Dillon, a springer spaniel from Lyneham, out-wagged hundreds of other hounds to win the Waggiest Tail Category.

It was four-year-old Dillon's first competition and he also made it through to the Top Dog final where he was third.

His owner, Barry Winsper, said: "We didn't really expect to enter him, let alone him win a prize."

Barry explained that part of the reasons they entered him was to help him overcome his nervousness with strangers.

"We took him along and he absolutely loved it. He really surprised us."

Not only did Dillon walk away with his head held high but he also won a rosette and goody bag.

Barry added: "We've got about a month's supply of Bakers' dog food now."

Sponsored by Purina PetCare, the event attracted hundreds of dogs, from all over the country to compete for the Bakers Top Dog competition.

It was watched by more than 10,000 spectators and the organisers hope to make it an annual event.

The overall winner was Ben, a seven-year-old German shepherd-collie cross from Rochdale.
