Independent-minded people with learning difficulties are being offered a helping hand with their housing and investors who help out can make a profit too.

There are 636 adults with learning difficulties in Swindon.

Golden Lane Housing, a charity set up by Mencap, wants to help them live independent lives in their own homes.

A roadshow at the Town Hall in Euclid Street will explain more about the scheme to people in Swindon. It takes place on September 30 between 11am and 2pm.

Across the UK, an estimated 87,000 people with a severe learning disability still live with their parents, and a third of them live with parents over the age of 70.

Golden Lane Housing has launched a Housing Investment Bond, to encourage people to lend their support.

The money invested will be used to buy and rent out quality houses to people with a learning disability.

The minimal investment is £500.

The Bond is for a 10-year fixed term and investors will receive annual interest at the rate of the Retail Price Index plus one per cent. At the end of the 10-year period investors will have their capital repaid.

Golden Lane housing spokeswoman Michelle Harris said: "Private landlords often don't want to rent to people with learning disabilities a lot of doors are closed to them in terms of housing."
