Ref. 27940-21WROUGHTON was transformed into a winter wonderland last night when the village's Christmas lights were switched-on.

Around 300 people braved the chilly evening to see the spectacle as more than 10,000 lights erupted in a blaze of colour.

Tim Benson, who has organised the annual project for the past four years, battled against the clock and the driving rain earlier this week to ensure they were up in time.

He said: "It has certainly been hard work, especially when it poured with rain the other day.

"Villagers and local businesses have been extremely generous. The whole project has cost around £2,000."

Father Christmas added to the occasion, handing out sweets to children before flicking the switch, which illuminated the main row of shops and High Street.

The Wroughton Silver Band provided musical accompaniment, blasting out traditional Christmas carols.

Among the crowd were Lisa Peach, 41, husband Graham, 42, and their two-year-old son Ethan, who live in the village's High Street.

Mrs Peach said: "I think it is really nice what they have done. It is the first time I have come down here for the switch-on and I am really impressed.
