SWINDON Tribe snatched victory in the North Wessex Winter League six-a-side competition after the final round on the Kennet and Avon canal between Wootton Rivers and Wolfhall.

Going into the final round, Devizes White held a one-point lead but could only finish halfway up in Sunday's clash, allowing Swindon to nick the title.

Devizes White only just held onto second place ahead of Lobbles (Stroud) with a weight advantage as both teams finished with 83 points.

Top team on the day was Devizes Red 97 points just ahead of Talisman's Gold (96) and Lobbies Black (94).

Bream made up most of the leading individual weights with Mick Saunders of Lobbies Gold coming out on top with 24-7-0 ahead of Tony Gilbert (Devizes Red) 20-2-0.

Weights then dropped to John Williams (Elgin) (11-10), Phil Powell (Tribe) (11-2) and Malcolm Elly (Lobbies Black) (7-7).

Top individual over the series was Turners Red star Paul Passmore, who dropped only nine out of a possible 100 points.

Second was Kevin Abigail (Devizes White) with 87, just ahead of Devizes Red's Darren Scott (86).

In atrocious weather conditions Ivy House Lake AC members competed for their Christmas match event, which was won by Dave Smith with 38-5-0 from (peg 5) using Expanda Pellet. Second was John Bailey 23-3-0 (peg 24) and third Alan Mitchell 18-8-0 (peg 15).

After being a runner up in Ridgeway Fisheries Opens, Tony Doyle went one better in the latest Open fished on the venue in appalling conditions on Saturday.

The Hayden St AS Frank Gardner Memorial match at Hannington was affected by a coloured River Thames but Terry Winter topped the weights with 4-15 of roach and perch.

Second was Rex Britton (4-6) and third Bob Stapleton (2-12).

The Wednesday Club held their midweek match on the canal at Wootton Bassett which was won by Pete Sole with 8-8.

Second was Lenny Simpson 5-2 and third George Barker 3-13.
