SWINDON Council chief executive Simon Birch will tonight tell the authority's decision-making cabinet lessons have to be learned from the Lydiard Park setback.

The council only committed to the multi-million pound restoration scheme at the eleventh hour after concerns about how much it could cost.

Now Mr Birch wants projects of the size and magnitude of Lydiard Park to be flagged up early in the council's financial planning to avoid any future nasty surprises. He also wants to see projects clearly prioritised against other initiatives.

The Advertiser reported last week how plans to return Lydiard to its former splendour have been put on ice because of concerns over the enormity of the task. The Heritage Lottery Fund, which was going to consider a £4m application on behalf of the council, announced it has put off making a decision because of the sheer scale of the project.
