THAT you have not heard any further about Lafarge's cement kilns at Westbury and their desire to burn hazardous wastes alongside 4,000,000 tyres per annum is not because of a lack of opposition.

Dr Andrew Murrison raised a list of serious concerns about the proposal in the House of Commons on his and Michael Ancram's behalf.

Both of these people are senior shadow ministers for health and the home office, not NIMBYs as the Environment Agency would have you believe the opposition to be.

The application is awaiting a response from the Primary Care Trust who is awaiting a response from the National Poisons Unit.

A public meeting was promised for the people of Westbury before the PCT response by Dr Femi Oduneye, a date and venue has as yet not been forthcoming from the PCT.

There remains on the table a challenge to the company and the agency to explain the hike in emission figures. The 12 per cent rise in production does not explain 30 per cent rise in Nox, 50 per cent rise in Sox and the 525 per cent in total particulates.

The question is also tabled why the agency allowed the reported figures on lead to be changed from less than 10kg to less than 100kg? Was it for our reassurance? Of course not, you don't allow increases in monitoring when you are trying to reduce emissions. It's because the figures actually increased and it is about time the company and agency came clean.

I would also like to remind people that the minister for DEFRA has refused our call for a public inquiry and also the call for a meeting with all of the cement communities and their MPs.

Westbury is not the only community who are at risk and up in arms, this is a national problem.

D R LEVY,

Chapmanslade,
