Too often parents are quick to resolve themselves of responsibility when their children do something wrong. District and town councillor Richard Wiltshire is not one of those parents.

Rather than simply condemn his son for writing-off his car in a drink-drive smash near Trowbridge, the Melksham councillor sought to educate his son about the effects his crime can have on innocent lives.

The Wiltshire Times name-and-shame campaign is not solely aimed at embarrassing drink-drivers in a public arena, it is about conveying the fact it can destroy lives, careers and reputations in an instant.

Cllr Wiltshire has shown his son our articles and taken him to a scrapyard in Westbury to show him the real results drink-driving can reap.

He should be commended for taking a responsible stance.

Rather than decline to comment because of his public position, Cllr Wiltshire chose to talk openly about his son's mistake.

It is time drink-driving was eradicated from our roads altogether. Driving a car after drinking is no different to walking around with a loaded weapon in your pocket.

If hard-hitting posters, distressing TV adverts and eye-opening statistics don't work, then naming these offenders might be the best solution.
