TOWN should set their sights on automatic promotion and scare the living daylights out of sides above them, believes manager Andy King.

A thrilling 4-2 victory at Stockport County on Saturday saw Town extend their unbeaten run to eight games and leaves them seven points adrift of the second promotion slot.

While a top six spot remains the minimum target, King is now looking at getting the maximum out of the season.

He said: "I think we can go for automatic promotion.

"Let's set our standards to the highest we can reach and that is to catch Bristol City and Queens Park Rangers.

"At times I think we're capable of it."

The first request from the players after Saturday's game was to find out how the teams above them had fared and that tells King there is a determination in the dressing room to succeed.

He said: "Part of my talk before the game was that some things in life are worth fighting for and I think success in football is one of them.

"We are entertaining and as good a side as there is in this division at the moment.

"We've just passed the 50-point mark, we're a good side and we're where we should be."

Striker Tommy Mooney, who took his goal tally for the season to 17 after netting a brace in the victory at Edgeley Park, agrees with his manager that automatic promotion is a realistic target.

Plymouth, Queens Park Rangers and Bristol City may be in the driving seat but there is still time for them to stall.

He said: "I think they are catchable. We have all three to play so it's in our hands. We want promotion."

Some pundits questioned Mooney's decision to join Town in the summer.

He said: "They were saying 'why Swindon?' I don't they'll be saying it now."

Town's reserves were due to entertain Swansea City at the County Ground today (2pm).
