A brilliant night of entertainment featuring three great jazz bands in one bill is promised next Tuesday at Salisbury's City Hall.

Pasadena Roof Orchestra, Dutch Swing College Band and Terry Lightfoot and his Jazzmen provide the triple bill. Duncan Galloway, vocalist with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, a band that has many links with Salisbury, is delighted to be returning to the city.

"I have very happy memories of Salisbury, particularly recording a CD at Salisbury Playhouse in the early 1990s, and I know we have visited since."

Duncan Galloway first became vocalist of Pasadena Roof orchestra in 1990, taking over from Robin Merrill, who was a relatively 'local boy', hailing from West Dean. Duncan remained the vocalist for six years before leaving to concentrate on his own show and guesting with several big bands. During that time he was voted Entertainer of the Year in Germany and founded his own group, Duncan Galloway and the London Hot Rhythm Boys. Duncan was invited back to sing as front man with Pasadena Roof Orchestra in 2002, and is greatly enjoying the current tour.

"The combination works well as we all have different styles," he says. "The Pasadena Roof Orchestra is well known for its portrayal of music from the 1920s and 1930s and it is an enormous hit in Germany. They love our music over there, whether it is free jazz or of a more nostalgic nature."

One number that Duncan will definitely be singing next week is the Bing Crosby favourite, Blue of the Night.

"Bing was born in 1904 and in his centenary year, we always include Blue of the Night. Bing was such a wonderful crooner."

There are ten multi-talented musicians and two singers that make up the Pasadena Roof Orchestra who specialise in celebrating the repertoire of the great entertainers - Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Cole Porter, and many more.

The other two bands appearing are the Dutch Swing College Band, generally regarded as one of Europe's oldest established traditional jazz bands and Terry Lightfoot and his Jazzmen, specialists in the music of Louis Armstrong.

VIPs of Jazz is at 7.30 pm next Tuesday, and tickets are available from the box office.
