SKATERS in Highworth need a leader to spearhead their fight for somewhere to practice.

The Highworth Sk8ters have been trying to build a skate area for several years.

About £25,000 is needed, but fundraising was put on hold when the group's chairman, Rob Mountain, left Highworth to live in Wok-ingham last month.

In fact, the youngsters suffered a double blow as Rob's wife Julie acted as their secretary.

Over the last six years, the skaters have raised £6,500 through events such a skateathon, games even-ings and car washes.

They have also been pledged a further £2,000.

The group is eager to organise more events, but they need someone with good leadership qualities to head the campaign.

Although the group has five members, no one wants to take on the role of leader.

Group member Sandra Cox said: "We are all very committed to the appeal, but no one feels able to take on Rob's role.

"We need someone with natural leadership qualities.

"Whoever takes it on won't be on their own. We are all here to give as much support as we can."

Anyone who is interested in leading the group, or becoming secretary, should call Sandra on 01793 766232.

The group is to meet at 8pm on March 4 at High-worth Methodist Church to discuss the issue.

The problem in High-worth has always been finding a suitable location for a skatepark.

Hopes that an area of land at the entrance to the golf course in Swindon Road could be used were dashed last year.

The site is owned Swindon Council, which said the plans were not suitable.

Plans to build a park at Highworth Recreation Centre also fell through.

Skaters currently use pavements and car parks, which causes a problem for pedestrians and motorists.

Sandra said the appeal desperately needs a kick-start.

She said: "When I moved to Highworth 17 years ago they were talking about a skatepark and it is disgraceful that we still don't have one.

"They have managed to build one in Lechlade, so why can't we?"

Plans are also in place to build a permanent skate-park in Cricklade.

The scheme is currently being considered by North Wiltshire District Council.

The council is also hoping to buy about £50,000 worth of mobile skate equipment by the summer. Ashton Keynes would be among the parishes to benefit.
