AM I the only one to have noticed the significance of the road safety signs that have sprung up along Pinehurst Road and the Circle?

These signs state that there have been 71 accidents in this area in the last five years, 23 of which were speed related and now motorists can look forward to a 20 mph speed limit in future.

Let's just stop and consider the facts. 71 accidents in five years doesn't seem too bad a record when you work out how many million vehicles must have driven through the area during that time.

The 23 speed related accidents are actually less than a third of all the accidents, yet it's this minority that is being targeted by the Council.

There is no breakdown given to show exactly what actions contributed to these accidents.

How many were due to the idiots that ride their bicycles in the dark with no lights, how many are due to children playing in or around the road, how many are due to people walking into the road without looking?

What is being done to stop any of this? Nothing!

When I asked the Road Safety Officer he admitted it was easier to attack the motorist than educate the thoughtless pedestrian.

I feel it's time we introduce the crime of Jay Walking in Britain.

If the Government was serious about road safety it would spend the whole £32 billion it takes each year in motoring taxes on our roads not just the current £6 billion.

Two weeks ago I was turning into Whitworth Road by the Moonrakers pub, just beyond the pub entrance there is a Pelican crossing, the road was very busy.

The crossing lights were on green for vehicles and yet three schoolgirls were stood on the road at the crossing trying to force cars to stop.

At the same time a schoolboy just ran across the road through the moving cars.

As the Road Safety Officer says it's just easy money catching and fining motorists, but it would take time and money to educate and police our darling children.
