THE Malmesbury Town Hall Action Group is concerned that North Wiltshire District Council is holding up plans for the building's redevelopment.

In January the council abandoned a £1.3m scheme to redevelop the town hall and gave Malmesbury just three months to come up with an alternative scheme or risk the sell-off of the town hall to the highest bidder.

The action group submitted an application for demolition of the building to leave just the exterior shell

English Heritage however, demanded proof that the building had no marketable use. It was put on the market for six months with a condition that any buyer has to retain its present use.

North Wiltshire District Council's area planning committee agreed that the building had no marketable value and approved the plan.

Chairman Ian Pollard also expected the council's executive committee to agree demolition but now leader Ruth Coleman has said they still have to consider the matter.

Mr Pollard said he had expected those proposals be discussed earlier. "It's frustrating our attempts to progress against a tight deadline."
