SCREWFIX FIRST DIVISION: CORSHAM Town boss Colin Bush has given young striker Alan Griffin permission to train with Chippenham Town but the 20-year-old will stay at Corsham until the end of the season.

Swindon Supermarine are among other clubs to show an interest in Griffin but Bush feels he is being sensible by keeping his options open.

"He is a bright lad and he is loyal. He has decided to stay here until the end of the season and then look around, which is great for us.

"He spoke to Steve White last week about a move to Chippenham but in the end he has just agreed to go and train there, which will be good for him.

Then in the summer if he decides to move he can do pre-season training with them and benefit from playing in some friendlies but he will make up his mind then.''

White and Bush have also agreed Griffin can play for the Bluebirds if Corsham do not have a fixture the same weekend. "We are not in the same league so there is nothing to stop a player playing for more than one club,'' said White.

Griffin put in another sparkling display in an encouraging team performance against second-placed Clyst on Saturday. The display almost made up for the 5-1 beating Bush's men took at Clyst earlier in the season.

They more than hold their own on Saturday and Griffin and Scott Lye both had excellent chances late on to win the match.

Bush was delighted at how his men matched Clyst. "We kept our shape well and we played some good football. It was a better game than you'd think to look at the score.''

Both sides also had a penalty appeal turned down by Bush thought that at least the referee had evened things up.

The battling display came after a narrow 3-2 defeat at high-flying Bristol Manor Farm last Wednesday.

"We've put in two good performances in very different games and matched two of the top sides.

"We had chances to win on Saturday but we've got no complaints. It was a very different game, the defences were on top and there were very few chances. Both keepers had to stay alert because they did not have much to do."

Corsham midfielder Jack Cullis had the only real chance of the first half but his shot from the left hand side of the penalty area was well held by the Clyst goalkeeper.

Bush was forced into two early changes, replacing the injured Russell Lodge (ankle) with Gary Blackwood and Frank Coleman (ankle) with Steve Roddy. After the break former Exeter City player Graham Cheeseman wasted an early chance to give Clyst the lead.

Lye, then seemed to be pulled down in the penalty area but the referee ignored the home side's protests and waved play on.

A few minutes later it was Clyst's turn to feel hard done by as the ball appeared to strike Gary Blackwood's hand in the penalty area but the referee again waved play on.

For the last ten minutes Corsham dominated as they pushed forward in search of the win. Griffin and Lye both raced clear but on both occasions they hit the ball past the goalkeeper but it was cleared off the line.

Bush was full of praise for elder pros Nigel Curtis and John Woods, who he feels are a great example to his younger players. "They just keep going and it is tremendous,'' he said.

"I want them to be encouraging the youngsters when they are out there. When I came here we were a very quiet side but I think we are getting over that now.''

Another contributor to the decibel level is former Swindon and Chippenham defender Gareth Davies who has played just four games for the club because of injury.

He has been out since before Christmas with a recurrence of the knee injury that ended his professional career but Bush hopes to have him back soon.

"I'll be calling him to see how he is doing. You can't say we have missed him because he has only played four games but he is an inspiration to the younger players,'' he said.

Corsham face Bitton at home on Saturday and Bush hopes to have utility layer Ben Highmore signed from Calne Town in time to be eligible to play.

With doubts over the fitness of Lodge and Coleman he could prove useful.

"He can play just behind the strikers, in midfield and he has even played wing back this year so he will be a useful addition,'' he said.
