THE mother of a disabled boy is upset about teenagers who have been congregating at the new specialist playground for disabled children.

Michelle Smith said during the half term holiday when the £12,000 playground was officially opened she was unable to let her son Kieran use the facility.

Kieran, four, has cerebral palsy and the new play area with specially adapted equipment was the perfect place for him to play.

"A lot of people have been complaining," said Mrs Smith. "When I took Kieran there to use it there were kids all over it, even as old as 15 and 16. When I asked if they could get off I just got abuse from them.

"The only time we can use it now is when the kids are at school, as Kieran is only part time at the moment. But he will be full time from September and he will probably never be able to use it.

"It is not fair. Some of them are far too old for it" she said.

Deputy town clerk Linda Wakefield, who raised the money for the playground, said she would speak to the police about the problem.

She said: "This is going to happen in every play area in the country. We can't ban anyone because it is a public place. Hopefully they will lose interest and move on."

PC Hans Monahan of Calne Police Station said they had been called to the playground once since it opened.

"I will make my colleagues aware and we can give friendly advice to the young people when we see them," he said.
