THE Youth Centre in Marlborough is undergoing its most extensive refurbishment since it opened 30 years go.

The centre is closed temporarily while workmen carry out major work including the installation of a lift. Previously the two levels were only connected by stairs.

Youth leader Jan Edwards said the new lift would help the centre to meet modern access requirements.

Ms Edwards said the alterations, which are being financed by Wiltshire County Council, were long overdue.

She said: "We want to link with any disabled groups in the area and now they will be able to use the building because it will be accessible to everyone."

As part of the changes the former administrative office is being extended and turned into a music room/studio where users of the centre community groups as well as the young members can record their own music.

The leader said: "This is not just for the young people here but for Marlborough as a whole."

Members are also busy building new portable wooden skate ramps. They are being helped by retired joiner and woodwork teacher David Rawlins.

It is hoped the centre will be open again on Monday. There will be a session each Monday from 6.30pm to 8.30pm for 12 to 14-year-olds and from 8.30pm to 9.30pm for the 15 to 19s. On Tuesdays there will be a girls' only night for the 12 plus age group.

Wednesdays from 7pm to 9.30pm, will be sports night with a variety of sports encouraged in conjunction with the Marlborough Leisure Centre. Thursdays will be creativity nights with all sorts of crafts plus music and dance.

Once a month, on a Wednesday, there will be what the centre is calling a Boys to Men night for the 15 plus age group with a variety of speakers in subjects connected with growing up including careers, further education, relationships and the abuse of drugs and alcohol. Wiltshire's youth democracy worker Will Kay encourages young people to find out about their rights and responsibilities.

A summer programme will involve activities for youth in Great Bedwyn, Aldbourne and the Ogbournes.

The annual meeting will be held on Monday, March 23 at 7.30pm, and anyone interested in its work will be welcome to attend.
