GAZETTE & HERALD: AFTER months of building work and controversy, Emery Gate's new caf will open its doors tomorrow.

The change from the former Salad Select shop to the new caf with seating area hasn't been a smooth one.

The project first came under the spotlight last year, when former tenants Salad Select were given notice to quit by Emery Gate.

Customers of the takeaway urged the centre to re-think, but despite strong public support, Salad Select closed its doors and the builders moved in.

Last month other traders in the centre complained about Boswells plans to install tables for smokers in the non-smoking centre.

Tenants attended a meeting in December, where they voted against the plan, but Emery Gate gave Boswells permission saying the situation would be monitored.

Owned by the Burn family from Swindon, who also have a cafe in Swindon and will soon open a branch in Trowbridge, Boswells Caf boasts a large counter serving hot and cold meals and drinks.

The former circular meeting area outside Somerfield supermarket has been converted into a raised seating area to include smokers' tables and five non-smoking.

Director Nick Burn said: "We recognise the needs of families, shoppers, office workers, the young and not so young and provide a service, menu and environment accordingly."
