A RUNNER who is prepared to go the extra mile to save the planet is taking part in the London marathon to help Salisbury conservation charity Plantlife.

The big race, on April 18, will be David Walker's 10th marathon in the capital - and the father-of-four says nothing can beat it.

"It is just the most incredible carnival," he said.

"I've run the New York marathon, too, but the London marathon is the best in the world - it's fantastic."

In the past, Mr Walker's marathon efforts have been for Sargent Cancer Care but, this time, he decided to support Salisbury's newest conservation charity.

"I have lived in the city since 1976 and I wanted to run for one of our local organisations," he said.

"I think it's great Plantlife has moved here.

"Also, I'm very interested in conservation issues and really support the core of Plantlife's work, to protect wild plants and flowers."

Mr Walker (56), of Campbell Road, Salisbury, has embarked on a gruelling training schedule, and often completes 20-mile runs through the Woodford Valley, in all weathers.

"It was a bit tricky with the snow," he said.

"But the training is going pretty well.

"I always worry that I haven't done enough, but my family will be there to cheer me on."

If all goes well in the 26-mile slog, Mr Walker hopes to cross the finish line in less than four hours and raise £1,000 for Plantlife along the way.

"I'm really looking forward to it because it is such a wonderful thing to be involved in," he said.

"It might be my 10th marathon, but the excitement doesn't wear off."
