SWINDON skipper Paul Wakefield is not about to turn his nose up at the chance of lifting the Dorset & Wilts 1st XV Vase even though he admits it was not top of the club's priority list at the start of the season.

The Greenbridge Road club have their first crack at the county title for four years when they tackle Trowbridge in the final at Devizes RFC tomorrow (2.30pm).

With promotion from Berks, Bucks & Oxon One now all but unobtainable, the competition represents the last opportunity for Wakefield's men to get their hands on some silverware.

The captain insists the clash is not a 'make or break' for Swindon's season but he still wants to be the one lifting the trophy come 4pm tomorrow afternoon.

"The cup has given a little bit of a lift in motivation levels for training and playing,'' said Wakefield.

"And it's also something the club can get behind the team for.

"It's an important game and the fact we have reached the final has given us something to focus on.''

He added: "I always say the league table tells you where you are and, with our results, we have been third best in the league this season.

"It perhaps has not gone as well as we would have hoped but it would be nice to pick up something by way of a trophy this season.''

Trowbridge are a league higher in Southern Counties South, having been promoted last season.

They have also enjoyed some ding-dong battles with Wootton Bassett, to whom Swindon lost narrowly in a friendly clash last week.

Leading try scorer Wakefield, who will himself end a month-long injury absence to play tomorrow, admitted: "We don't know an awful lot about them, but they seem to be similar to us.''

Swindon have the luxury of a virtually full-fit squad to pick from.

Lock Nick Warren regains his place, with Stuart Cock returning to outside centre and Nathan Waite to full-back.

The ability to field six replacements also allows Swindon to have significant tactical options on the bench.

Centre James Turney and no 8 Mark Scarrott will be looking to make a major impact as the game progresses, and wingers Whatcott and Warren are proven finishers.

Swindon: Brooks, Holt, Davis, Warren, Atkinson, Chapman, Daniels, King, Courtney, Knott, Seynaeve, Wakefield (capt), Cock, Haxton, Waite. Subs: Lowe, Webb, Scarrott, Turney, Whatcott, Warren.
