YOUNG people from Wiltshire and Swindon can now apply for an Education Maintenance Allowance to help with the cost of studying at school or college.

Students aged 16 who live on their own or whose parents or guardians earn £30,000 or less are eligible to receive up to £30-a-week which will be paid directly into their bank account.

In addition students can receive bonuses of up to £100 for good attendance, coursework and progress.

For 16-year-olds who want to study A-levels, GCSE's, GNVQ's, NVQ's or basic skills, the EMA will help towards the cost of learning and contribute to travel expenses. The new initiative, which doesn't affect other benefits, was introduced by the Government earlier this year in a bid to ensure equal opportunity.

Payable to the student for at least two years, the allowance can only be obtained once a valid course has been chosen.

Young people who are interested in applying for an EMA can do so by picking up an application form from their school, college or from their Connexions Personal Advisor.

Alternatively call the EMA helpline number 0808 10 16219 or log onto www.ema.dfes.gov.uk.
