St Mary's School, Swindon triumphed in the annual Westrop Primary School tournament nearly three months after their quest for the trophy began.

The competition was originally scheduled to take place on April 5 at Highworth Rec.

But heavy rain caused the event to be abandoned halfway through.

The original list of 32 teams had been whittled down to 16 before the heavens opened, and the surviving sides were invited back to Westrop on Saturday to finish the contest at the second attempt.

St Mary's did not look like obvious winners after finishing second in the first phase behind Group D winners Catherine Waite A, but that was enough to see them through to the quarter-finals.

Cricklade A won Group A from Goddard Park A, while Grange and Catherine Waite B eased through in Group B and Northview A and Blunsdon successfully negotiated Group C.

Penalty shootouts were the order of the day in the knockout stages.

Blunsdon eliminated Cricklade, Goddard Park defeated Northview and St Mary's denied Grange in quarter-final shootouts.

Catherine Waite A managed to go through in normal time with a 1-0 win over their own B team.

More spot-kick drama followed in the semis, with Blunsdon and St Mary's 3-2 winners over Catherine Waite and Northview respectively after goalless stalemates.

The showpiece did produce a winner without the need for penalties as St Mary's kept another clean sheet to triumph 1-0 and take the trophy.
