Tony Adams was a welcome guest at the Highworth Town junior tournament at the weekend and, in the true tradition of his legendary Arsenal side, every one of the six-a-side finals finished 1-0.

Adams, who lives near Cirencester, was cheering on his son who plays for Ciren Juniors under 13s.

And the former England centre-half would have been impressed by some of the defending on show in the latter stages of the One Stop Shop Fitters-sponsored event.

Stratton Juniors under nine started the ball rolling with a single-goal victory over Devizes Town Youth in front of the new pavilion at Highworth's revamped Rec.

Croft A took the under 10 crown with victory over Blunsdon Colts by the same margin.

Dominic Rekowski's header from Kristopher Redford's long throw was enough to win Shaw B the under 11 trophy at Ciren Juniors' expense.

Old Town United continued the trend with a 1-0 win over Ferndale Rodbourne in the under 12 section.

The Ciren side featuring Adams Junior were beaten by a solitary strike against North Oxford in the under 13 final and Stratton Juniors B secured the club's second win of the weekend with success over Ferndale Rodbourne in the under 14 showpiece.

There were also sportsmanship awards for Calne-based White Horse Juniors (under six), Shaw (under seven) and St Edmonds (under eight).

The competition finished just in time before the deluge of rain on Sunday afternoon and Highworth mayor Gordon Jefferies was on hand to dish out the prizes to the winning clubs.

Event organiser Fraser Haines hailed the club's most successful tournament yet.

He said: "We had 210 teams here over the weekend. We've been running the tournament for 12 years and this is the biggest one we've ever held.

"It was great to have Tony Adams here too. He's a lovely bloke and he was happy to sign autographs for everyone."
