KEY representatives in Bradford on Avon have slated the latest plans to develop the Kingston Mill site in the heart of the town.

Town councillors and community representatives are among those to say they are 'seriously disappointed' by plans proposed by developer Taylor Woodrow.

Gerald Milward-Oliver, of the town's Community Development Trust, said: "We are all very disappointed. It's a step backward in many respects."

Jocelyn Feilding, chairman of the town council's planning committee, said: "There is not much in it for the town. We want to improve Bradford's public life."

The public also had a chance to have a say on the plans at an exhibition held in the town library which Taylor Woodrow has hailed as a success but Mr Milward-Oliver believes there is still work to do.

He said: "The majority of people in the town expect to see more of a mixed use development than we have at the moment."

In a statement, the town council said too much space was allocated for housing and not enough for public and commercial space and believes traffic problems within the site will not be solved by the proposed development.

Mr Milward-Oliver said he hopes some of the issues will be resolved at a public meeting with Taylor Woodrow next week.

Emma Knobbs, spokesman for Taylor Woodrow, said: "We are very pleased with the response to the exhibition of our work in progress for the development of the Kingston Mill site.

"Overall the majority of people highly commended the design and I know people are eager for work to start as soon as possible.

"We recognise there are concerns but we are confident the workshop next week will prove a forum for constructive and realistic discussion of the proposals."
