THE Swindon Stop the War Coalition plans to take to the streets in protest at the handover of sovereignty in Iraq.

They claim that the handover is a stunt in advance of the American presidential elections rather than a genuine transfer of power.

On Wednesday at noon protesters will gather at the war memorial in Regent Street and put their point across with song and a street theatre.

Coalition secretary Andy Newman said: "We are completely in favour of Iraq being handed over to Iraqis, but this handover of sovereignty isn't real.

"It is a stunt for the American presidential elections.

"The American occupation army will stay, and all the key decisions will still be taken by the Amer-icans."

During the street theatre the organisers will also be leafleting the public about a public meeting planned for July 12, at which anti-war Labour MP Alan Simpson will speak.

It will be held at Queen's Park Community Centre in Euclid Street, beginning at 7pm, and all are welcome.

Mr Newman added that the coalition hoped the meeting would influence South Swindon Labour Party to select an anti-war candidate to succeed Julia Drown, who is stepping down after the next election.
