FIVE suspects have been arrested in connection with the spate of so-called 'creeper burglaries' in West Swindon.

The two men and three women were in custody yesterday following an early morning swoop involving 20 officers.

Police also seized a large quantity of clothing and footwear from the address in West Swindon. This is being sent for forensic examination.

Householders in Westlea, Freshbrook, Toothill and Shaw have been targeted by creeper burglars since June. The intruders have been entering properties silently via windows left open during the hot weather, often while the occupants are asleep.

Police believe West Swindon was targeted because its network of cycleways and footpaths makes properties easier to access.

Thirty-six houses have been hit, and items such as mobile phones, jewellery, CDs and DVDs taken.

The thieves have also stolen cars after taking keys. The suspects, who are aged between 16 and 23, were all arrested at the same house and taken to Westlea police station for questioning.

Detective Sergeant Ady Wys, who heads Swindon police's Operation Delta anti-burglary squad, said: "They are being questioned on suspicion of burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary and conspiring to handle stolen goods.

"These offences are very upsetting for people because it leaves them feeling vulnerable in their homes.

"By shutting windows before you fall asleep you will be helping us to keep burglaries low," he said.

"This is why we have devoted as much resources as possible to stopping the problem."

Police have repeatedly warned householders to keep windows shut at night this summer.

Det Sgt Wys added: "I can't stress enough how important it is to make sure your property is secure before you go to bed.

Despite the spate of break-ins, Swindon police say they are winning the fight against burglars.

Det Sgt Wys said: "Last week there were 12 burglaries against a target of keeping them under 23."
