SWINDON Supermarine's first home game of the Southern League season ended in a 2-0 defeat to Evesham.

The visitors took the lead in controversial fashion on 30 minutes when David Cairns' looping header dropped in despite offside protests.

Evesham doubled their lead a minute later when Ian Howell's pass fell short of Giles Harris and Lee Ross picked up the loose ball and fired home.

Marine were dealt a further blow at half-time as they lost Harris through injury, paving the way for Tony Joyce to make his first appearance since returning to the club from Highworth.

Joyce almost made the perfect return, his header striking the base of the post.

The home side continued to peg back the visitors and Alan Young seemed to be upended in the box, but referee Simon Snartt waved the appeal away.

Marine's bad luck continued as Dave Gee whipped in a fierce cross that was almost turned into his own net by Lee Knight but struck the bar and fell to safety.

Chippenham Town followed their 6-0 opening day drubbing of Dunstable with a 2-1 win at home to Solihull Borough.

James Constable took five minutes to open his account on Saturday, but he was even quicker off the mark against Borough, capitalising on a defensive mix up to prod into an unguarded net with just three minutes on the clock.

Ian Herring headed against the bar and Ellis Wilmot saw his effort saved when clean through as the Bluebirds completely controlled the first period.

The visitors hit back early in the second half as Mark Sheppard netted with Solihull's first attempt on target.

But Constable struck again with a measured finish on 53 to secure maximum points and keep Steve White's men top of the early Southern Premier Division standings.

Calne are the pacesetters in the Screwfix First Division after a 5-1 victory at home to Cadbury Heath.

Neil Grant opened the scoring on 11 minutes before the away side levelled.

But short corner routines saw Glen Armstrong and Ryan Pratley give Calne a two-goal cushion at the break.

James Lye and a late Matt Pratley lob secured an impressive triumph for the Bremhill View Boys.

Corsham won their first Premier Division match, beating neighbours Melksham 2-1 at Southbank.

Alan Griffin put Corsham ahead, Owen Bryan equalised from the spot, but Dave Kilmurray hit the winner.

Devizes were beaten 1-0 at home by Brislington.
