Gap years are no longer the preserve of public school types.

Upfront tuition fees mean that people are using their gap year to earn money to fund their way through university or gain real work experience.

Students applying for university in 2004-5 but wanting to defer their places until 2006 have been saved the burden of incoming top up fees because of an amendment to the Higher Education Bill. But those opting for less career oriented gap years such as international travel or volunteering may be making an investment in their future as well as having a life changing experience.

Employers say that people who have had a year out end up more confident and rounded individuals, which is an advantage in the job market.
