I refer to the letter by Diana Griggs last week asking for a boycott of Tesco because of its intention to turn the Brook Road shop into a Tesco Express.

I have lived on this estate for 18 years and it is only in recent years we have had a post office. It is a convenience for some people, but for most things e.g. car tax, large parcels etc you have to go to the main post office anyway.

As I recollect a while back a member of staff was followed home, her house broken into, the post office keys stolen and the post office was robbed, so it is obviously a security risk.

Nobody has asked me or anybody I know who lives on the estate our views, it has just been assumed Tesco is the "bad boy" and it is fashionable for everybody to complain about it. No disrespect to Mrs Griggs, but she doesn't actually live here.

The Government recently launched an advertising campaign to encourage people to have pensions, benefits etc paid direct into bank accounts, which is obviously safer than a trip to the post office, to pick up cash.

I would welcome the chance to have a "proper" shop on the estate that sells fresh meat, fruit and vegetables at reasonable prices and even though some of the "boycott Tesco campaigners" wouldn't dare admit it, it would also save the old folk a trip into town for shopping as the current store in Brook Road is very much a convenience store. It is unfortunate not everybody can be pleased, whatever the outcome, but it also important for campaigners to remember they must seek the views of everybody concerned. This is a large estate, with many families who may welcome a decent supermarket and the case may be the majority would actually prefer to forgo the post office, so when you speak for all concerned please make sure you consider both sides of the coin.
