SEVERAL writers have rightly expressed concern that whilst Wiltshire County Council has spent many years working on the highly suspect project, namely the Hilperton relief road, Staverton does not seem to figure in the reckoning.

May I assure readers that at the famous, or I know some would say infamous, pre-meeting (chaired by Cllr Jane Scott) held prior to the full council meeting on September 25, 2003, this question was aired.

I don't recall who asked the question, or if the meeting was properly minuted, but the response was that the traffic model showed that Staverton would be a "pinch-point somewhere that drivers would avoid".

Not good news for the publicly foreseeable future.

Cllr Tony Moor kindly spoke against the Gap road at the full meeting. I really thought the cabinet were in danger of being lynched and do not condone the verbal abuse they received.

I will never forget a comment from someone on the inside who will forever remain anonymous "People come here thinking they can change things but they can't".
