WENDY Anderson has qualified for the last eight in the National Over 55's singles.

The vastly-experienced Rodbourne Cheney bowler came back from 16-3 down to clinch her place in the last eight at Coventry on September 11.

Anderson had previously seen off the challenge of Isle of Wight's Norma Turner 21-4 at Hook, Hampshire, but in the last 16 at Three Mile Cross (Berkshire) she was staring defeat in the face.

Playing Hampshire's Ann Pearce, she trailed 16-3 after only 10 ends.

But Anderson then got the mat and chipped away to cut the deficit to only 20-16.

However, on the 24th end Pearce was holding game shot but Andersen took her wood out for a count of three to cut the gap to 20-19.

On the next end she climaxed a tremendous revival by claiming victory with a two.

n RODBOURNE Cheney fell at the first hurdle in the men's National Triples at Worthing.

The trio of Dave Royle, Dave Carter and Gary Morphet were beaten 21-12 in the first round by Egham (Surrey).

Spencer Melksham won their preliminary round match 18-15 against Surrey's other representatives, South London, but then went out in the first round 17-12 to Berkshire side Hagbourne.

Wiltshire's next interest at Worthing will be in the pairs which begin on Monday.

n PURTON bid for more glory on Tuesday in the National Top Club competition.

Winners of the county title, they then comfortably beat Plessey Radar, Isle of Wight, 3-1 in the last 32.

Purton now face Crediton (Devon) who beat Cornwall in the previous round.

They face the Devon champions on Tuesday in the last 16 on the neutral green at Clevedon.

Purton are forced to make one change to their normal line-up as Deana Gingell is unavailable.

Reserve Dorothy Paish comes into the rinks team to replace skip Gingell, with Jean Comley moving from three to four to skip the quartet.

THE annual mixed galas organised by the Wiltshire Bowlers Joint Council take place tomorrow at three venues, Amesbury, Supermarine and Swindon Bowls Club (10am).

Eight teams will compete at each venue playing in two sections. The section winners meet in the final for the £100 first prize while the runners- up receive £50.
