A Wincanton articulated lorry struck a beam on the Kingway Bridge, on the A429, near Corston around 11am this morning.

The lorry's trailer was badly damaged in the incident but the driver is not believed to have been hurt.

Malmesbury police went to the scene and the lorry was later driven out.

Neither trains nor traffic were delayed by the accident.

Parish councillor Daphne Jones says this is the sixth time this year a lorry has struck the bridge.

Simon Ryan, from Barton Way, Corston, noticed the lorry while travelling to work.

Mt Ryan said: "The front of the trailer was all mashed up.

"It was in a bit of a mess. I cannot believe that someone is not accounting for these accidents.

"It must be costing thousands of pounds each time a lorry strikes the bridge.

"Network Rail often have to cancel trains, drivers suffer traffic disruptions and farmers have to find other routes. There are tangible costs here."

Exasperated Corston residents have demanded more signs warning lorry drivers about the dangers of striking the bridge.

Only last month a lorry was wedged under it for four hours causing traffic and rail diversions.

They say there are far more accidents at the blackspot than the police are called to.
