FA VASE and Wessex League double winners Winchester City strolled around Western Way on Saturday with confidence and gave Bemerton Heath Harlequins a football lesson.

The visitors opened strongly with slick passing and movement.

Inside the opening 12 minutes they went close through Lloyd Webber, Ian Mancey and James Musselwhite before eventually taking the lead on 15 minutes.

Mark Smith caused problems out on the left and crossed for Webber to crash home from the edge of six-yard box.

Bemerton appeared to wake up after this and for a short spell kept their visitors under pressure.

Neil Cole's stunning shot from 25 yards was turned around the post by Simon Arthur from a corner, and soon after Cole almost caught the 'keeper out. But Arthur again did well to hold onto another stinging shot from the 'Quins striker.

However, Darren Crow-foot was the busier custodian.

He saved a full-blooded header from Mancey, which he managed to finger-tip over the bar. From the corner, the same player headed over from an open position.

Bemerton's defence were having a torrid time and Adam Nash gave the ball away on 37 minutes, leaving Matthew Bicknell with an open goal to score the second.

Winchester defender Mark Jones and Heath's anchorman Steve Waite, clashed heads towards the end of the half and both had to leave the field.

David Goff replaced Jones, but Waite continued until half time.

Winchester scored just on half time as Mancey cut inside from the left and gave Crowfoot no chance with a flashing drive.

Ian Chalk and Mark Daubney came on after the interval in place of Waite and Steve Caswell.

But it did not take long for Winchester to increase their lead as Smith finished with a simple touch after a quick break on 55 minutes.

Bemerton threw on their third sub with Jason Harsant replacing Baker.

Heath never gave up and managed to pull one back when Graham Mankin was set up by Chalk and he scored from close range.

But back came Win-chester and Musselwhite made it five from Shaun Dyke's cross in the 84th minute. Two minutes later Harsant scored a superb second for the 'Quins as Chalk's accurate cross found him in space.

DESPITE two early goals from Adam Nash and Stuart Findlay, Heath suffered a 3-2 reverse at home to BAT on Tuesday night.

Second half goals from Richard Gregory (2) and a Masters penalty proved their undoing.
