A PLAN for a speed limit on the A4 London Road hasbeen slammed Chippenham town councillors who fear the limits are not low enough and do not go far enough.

The new proposals, put forward in the wake of the Gazette's A4 safety campaign, include the lowering of speed limits.

The current 50mph limit from Chippenham would be linked into a new 40mph limit though the main part of Pewsham to just beyond the junction with the A342.

A 40mph limit was also proposed for the A342 Old Derry Hill through to the junction to Loxwell Farm.

Coun Sandie Webb was incensed the stretch of the A4 from Chippenham to the new playing fields would only have a 50 mph limit.

Coun Bill Douglas, a safety campaigner wanted to see the limit extended up the hill towards Studley crossroads as many accidents occurred when drivers were coming fast down the hill and encountered vehicles pulling out of the A342 junction.
