THERE will be by-elections to fill a vacant seat on Marlborough Town Council and one for the Kennet District Council Ogbourne ward.

Nominations closed at noon on Friday and there were three candidates for each seat.

The town council east ward vacancy was brought about by the resignation of school janitor George Worby just 15 months after he was elected.

The district council vacancy follows the death of long serving member Coun Patricia Courtman who lived in Mildenhall.

Miss Courtman had been a member of the former Marlborough and Ramsbury Rural District Council before it became part of the new Kennet District Council in 1974.

Candidates nominated for the town council vacancy are: Robert Dobie (LibDem), Brian McClintock (Ind) and Andrew Ross (Con).

The three candidates for the Ogbourne district council seat are: Debra Davis (LibDem), David Hunter (Con) and Frank Jeffrey (Lab).

Both by-elections will be held on Thursday October 28. Polling times have not yet been announced.
