14234/2GAZETTE &HERALD: As part of a year learning about Africa, Holy Trinity School is raising money to send a cow to Africa, joining with Calne and Blackland Parish Council's appeal to give a goat.
The idea is to raise money to buy a cow or a goat and give it to an African community where they can use it for milk and other produce.
The community can also breed more animals and sell surplus produce to raise money for medicines, seeds or to send children to school.
Headteacher at Holy Trinity School, Janis McBride, said: "The fund-raising starts from today onwards. This is when the children do sponsored swimming or silences and activities like that."
Mrs McBride added it cost £750 to send a cow and the school is also looking at sending chickens.
She said: "This could go on and on. We've started with send a cow because we wanted to aim big to fire the imagination of the children."
Parish priest Bob Kenway brought in a goat to show the pupils this week. Anybody wishing to help the school in its fund-raising exploits should contact Mrs McBride on (01249) 812424.
