TOWN councillors in Marlborough are asking planners to bring a halt to building modifications that they say are spoiling the historic appearance of the High Street.

Humberts estate agency is moving to new premises in the town and the owner of its office at 119 High Street wants to put in a new and lower window.

Coun Michael Gray told the Town Council planning committee on Monday there was a tendency to change the appearance of shops in the historic main street.

Coun Gray said the original door to the same building had "been removed and thrown in a skip two years ago".

Coun Gray said the owner wanted to put in a shop type window rather than the original Georgian glazed window.

He asked Kennet district councillors to ask their planning and conservation officers why these changes were even considered to a listed building within the town's conservation area.

By a vote of ten to one abstention the committee voted to tell Kennet they want to see the original window retained.
