A SWINDON school will be the brief centre of attention at England's World Cup qualifier with Wales at Old Trafford on Saturday when two of their teachers pick up a prestigious award on their behalf.

Even Swindon Junior's Head of PE Wayne Smith and Colin Jones, both Level 1 trained coaches, will be presented with the prestigious national FA Charter Standard School Award at the game.

The Raybrook Park-based school is one of only six in the country to receive the national accolade.

It aims to raise standards in the curriculum and out-of-school hours programmes and develop links with local Charter Standard clubs.

Smith said: "We hope the award will help to raise our profile and reward all the hard work and commitment that so many people have put in to make good quality football available, not just to our pupils, but to everyone in the community.''

The school have also received the thumbs-up from England legend Sir Trevor Brooking.

Sir Trevor, the FA's Director of Football Development, said: "The FA is committed to raising the standard of grass roots football.

"The award recognises what a positive contribution Even Swindon Junior is making to the community, enabling people to play football and develop their skills in a safe, structured and positive environment.''

Even Swindon Junior is home to four girls' and boys' teams, competing in local primary school leagues and the prestigious Colin Payne Trophy.

Another of the school's ventures includes players from Swindon Town visiting once a week to train with the children.

The school will receive an engraved plaque and a cheque for £300.
