SWINDON Gateway continues to be a contentious issue, representing, as it does, a Coate buried beneath urban development.
I think most Swindonians will deplore this threat to one of the loveliest areas within the borough.
The University of Bath has demanded Coate as the only suitable site for its expansion.
It wants to reduce Coate in particular, and Swindon in general, to an overspill site.
Swindon needs a university, but why does it have to be someone else's? It's high time the councillors displayed concern for the dignity, prestige and identity of the town and applied to the Government for funding for the University of Swindon.
Why go cap in hand to Bath? It's degrading, there is no reason why a Swindon University cannot be established in North Star. The town's two excellent colleges, would form the nucleus of this seat of higher education.
I have always considered Coate to be Swindon's gateway to the Downs. Let's keep it that way.
