I READ your story regarding traffic calming in Pinehurst (EA Oct 6) with a sense of despair. It states that each year 14 people are injured on the estate many of whom are children.
It also states that between September 1999 and August 2002, 20 youngsters were involved in road accidents. It is not clear how many of these accidents were the fault of the driver or the children themselves.
Swindon has a population of around 180,000. Allowing for one car per household, there must be at least 50,000 cars in the town itself. Would it not be better to teach pedestrians/cyclists how to use the roads correctly, rather than spend a lot of money on road calming measures that do not work.
Roads are dangerous but if we all treated them with respect, we would reduce accidents.
