WESTLECOT men opened their new indoor season in style with a crushing victory in the Denny Cup.

They cruised to a 54-shot success as they hammered Whitchurch 116-62 in their first round match in the national inter-club championship.

Westlecot took the honours on all four rinks even though it was a very close call for the quartet skipped by Ian Jefferies at Whitchurch.

They were 15-5 down at 10 ends and 19-9 adrift at 15. But had cut the deficit to 20-15 at 18 and grabbed a four on the last end to win by one shot.

Alongside Neil Smith's rink were always in charge and pulled away in the latter stages to win 30-17 with a halt called after 19 ends.

At Westlecot Mel Biggs' quartet produced a devastating performance.

They led 8-0 after five ends, 14-4 at 10 and 23-5 after 15. And continued to pile-up the shots finally winning by 34.

Graham Hatherall's rink were only 10-9 ahead at 10 ends but at 15 had moved 19-10 in front. They were pegged back to 21-19 at 18 but won in the end by six shots.

Westlecot will now play Nailsea in the next round on Saturday October, 23. They just edged home against Thornbury 79-75.

Home Rink 1: John Thomas, Jay Titcombe, Mike Jackson and Mel Biggs beat Richard Turvey 39-5. Rink 2: Kevin Embling, Dave Wheeldon, David Vowles and Graham Hatherall beat Dennis Noble 26-20.

Away Rink 1: Barry Sictorness, Chris Cheesley, Gary Morphet and Ian Jefferies beat Paul Parsons 21-20. Rink 2: Mike Hall, Hedley Bowen, Dave Snell and neil Smith beat Terry Lewis 30-17 (only 19 ends).
