REFORMED Biddestone centre back Ollie Mcanich is having one of his best seasons even though he his not playing in his favoured position up front.

Mcanich, 25, has been switched from centre back to striker constantly but prefers slotting in the goals as a forward.

Presently a defender, he scored 16 goals for Biddestone last year, but played at the back for his university side and admits that he lied to his manager last season to stay as a forward.

He said: "When I came to Biddestone I did not tell Gary Skidmore that I had experience as a defender as I wanted to stay as a striker. Somehow this summer he got word that I used to play as a defender and I have been there all season."

Manager Skidmore believes that Mcanich has improved since moving back to defence. He said: "He has not had a bad game all year. He plays with a lot of maturity."

Mcanich, who has played for Larkhall Athletic, Corsham and Paulton Rovers, does think that it is easier being a defender.

He said: "As a striker you are judged on the amount of goals that you score. Even when you play well but don't score you do not feel that you have done your job. I think that there is a lot more pressure put on you as a striker.

"I have enjoyed my season so far at the back and do not intend to go up front this year.

The defender admits that this season has been a lot different to the last. He said: "So far we are a struggling team. A striker here is not going to score 20 goals in a season, when we do keep a clean sheet or only lose by a goal to a top team the defence get praise."

Mcanich firmly believes that Biddestone can turn their season around especially after last week's 2-0 victory over Shepton Mallet.

Biddestone's next Screwfix First Division match is against Shrewton at home.
